Toiling away

The seedlings bought on Monday finally got planted today.
I suspect I have overcrowded the vege patch again. Gardening is definitely not as straightforward as knitting. I mean, I know the basics:

A) Grow what you eat.

But how many sweetcorn seedlings should I plant? It said to space the seedlings 45cm apart. But that looked like so much wasted space, so I disregarded that advice. Besides my gardening book advises me to plant in blocks so that the stems can be supported and tied together. Said book/author also says a row of dill on either side of the patch of corn makes both stronger and bear more heavily. Well, I couldn't quite afford two rows of dill (and I don't normally use this herb) so I just planted what I got the best way I saw fit.

B) Water, water, water.

Yet, I came across this in the aforementioned gardening book: "after planting, give each [tomato] plant a little water and then don't feed or water them until the first flowers have formed." So, to water or not to water????

C) Be on top of the weeding.

I'm told the garden mix we bought will be weed free for a while yet, so here's hoping that I don't have to contend with weeds this summer.

And here are the other two raised boxes. The right one shows the end result of Labour Day's effort.

Love the painted box.

Which gardening book was this, out of curiosity?

Thanks :)

oh did my link not work for ya? It was the "Get Fresh" one by Dennis Greville, "one of the country's most authoritative gardening writers and photographers" according to http://nzbookmonth.co.nz/blogs/dennis_greville/default.aspx
